Designed for parents to enjoy with children, filled with opportunities for reading aloud and fostering curiosity, this beautifully illustrated read-aloud anthology offers preschoolers the fundamentals they need to prepare for a happy, productive time in school—and for the rest of their lives. Millions of children have benefited from the acclaimed Core Knowledge Series, developed in consultation with parents, educators, and the most distinguished developmental psychologists. In addition to valuable advice to parents, including what it means for a child to be ready for kindergarten, special sidebars throughout the book help parents make reading aloud fun and interactive, suggesting questions to ask, connections to make, and games to play to enrich their preschooler’s learning experience.
Discover:
Favorite Poems and Rhymes—all beautifully illustrated. Read and recite together— from Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem “At the Seaside” to limericks by Edward Lear and tongue twisters by Jack Prelutsky, plus fun “clap along!” and “fingerplay” verses that parents and children can act out together.
Beloved Stories and Fables—read aloud from stories like “The Three Little Pigs” and the African folktale “Why Flies Buzz” —and open whole new worlds of learning and discovery.
Visual Arts—help your child appreciate and talk about art. Beautiful full-color reproductions of great works of art will foster early appreciation of art history while igniting discussions about shapes, colors, and different styles and media.

I will start by saying that this series is excellent. I will add that purchasing this book alone will be little benefit without the activity books What Your Preschooler Needs to Know: Activity Book 1 for Ages 3-4What Your Preschooler Needs to Know: Activity Book 2 for Ages 4-5. I originally purchased just this book, but since I already read, sing and do poetry with my daughter, there wasn't much of an added benefit with this alone. I decided to purchase the activity book for 3-4 to start off and ...

This is a great book. My son is two and a half and loves the songs and rhymes (although I do wish there was a CD of music since I can't remember the tunes for some of them). I love the history, science and art. We pick a few things to do or read everyday. He has fun and I feel like I'm making more of our time together.

I read her one of the poems and she was immediately drawn in. She kept asking for more and more. We spent an hour with the book on that first sitting and return to the book with great frequency.
There are illustrations, photographs, paintings, something visual on every page. I've been speaking the rhyming poems to my toddler who ...

We've been using this book series since our oldest child (now in 5th grade) entered Kindergarten. We've now gone back and purchased this book for our 4-year-old.
We send our kids to the local public schools, and I find these books to be a fantastic supplement. Reading these books with my older son has made it so much easier to find out where there are holes in his education, and have sparked some very interesting conversations. I quickly figure out where he's picked up some misconceptions, ...
