Editorial Review:Product Description:Based on a Rocky Mountain legend, John Reynolds Gardiner's story --like it's hero, Little Willy -- has all the ingredients of a winner, right down to the unforeseen drama at the finish line. Willy has a big job to do. When his grandfather falls ill, it is up to Willy alone to save their farm from the tax collector. Willy enters the National Dogsled Race, where he must beat the Indian Stone Fox and his five beautiful Samoyed dogs.
Allen Brewster has an amazing idea for his school science project: human photosynthesis, turning sunlight into food for humans. Everyone laughs at his outrageous scheme -- until Allen turns green, sprouts roots, and develops an overwhelming desire to soak up the sun instead of eating his dinner. Allan is turning into a plant! No one seems to believe that he isn't just playing a practical joke -- no one, that is, except the President of the United States, who declares Allen a threat to national security! Suddenly Allen Brewster and his discovery are...TOP SECRET!

I first read this book in grade school with the help of my mom. I remember it fondly as a heroic tale with a sad ending. I remember the illustrations vividly.
I walked past this book at the book store recently and was thrilled to see it and remember how much I had enjoyed it. I read it that night.

This story is very obviously wonderfully written and very touching. However, I am horrified that the dog dies in the end. My daughter is 9 and LOVES animals and she was devastated. I just had to remind her that it was just a story. It was on her summer reading list and I am going to suggest that they change it for next year.

This book may be short, but it ends on such a great note (sad, but great!) The main character is developed beautiful and as a reader we can understand him completely and we can feel his pain, worry, and frustration. The grandfather is shown with two side, one side not being that pretty. However much the story is about Willy and his grandfather, it is more just about Willy and his dog, and it is this relationship that makes the book what it is, beautiful.
I would recommend this to anyone, adult ...
