Editorial Review:Product Description:Studio: Acorn Media Release Date: 05/13/2003
Amazon.com:Acorn Media presents a beautifully realized boxed set that brings to life all the ghastliness and arch humor of Caroline Graham's intriguing mystery series. Set 1 includes four episodes:
Death's Shadow,
Strangler's Wood,
Blood Will Out, and
Beyond the Grave Each is set in a different village in the quaint but surprisingly lethal Midsomer County, complete with sharp portraits of the love and loathing that small-town life can breed. John Nettles plays Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby with a wry wit, a satisfyingly keen-but-not-supernatural intelligence, and a deep understanding of human nature. Daniel Casey as the much younger Sergeant Troy has a somewhat tougher job, painting his younger policeman's character in shorter bits over the course of the series, but he becomes a most welcome face. The series is beautifully acted and produced and the solutions are satisfying--not a clinker in the bunch. The DVDs include selected cast filmographies, a biography of author Caroline Graham, and a map of Midsomer County.

I loved this series from the moment I discovered it on A&E and later on the Biography channer. They are no longer showing it on DirectTV in my area which saddens me greatly...but, I have pruchased ALL of the DVD's and have watched them multiple times. I highly recommend them to anyone who knows how well the Brits do murder/mystery. John Nettles is amazing and have enjoyed his story lines/arch with each of his 3 Detective sidekicks...I did miss Detective Sgt. Troy however, when he moved on. This ...

I've seen about twenty of the Midsomer Murders and they are uniformly excellent. They represent a nice blurring of subgenres. At first they appear to be classic English mysteries, i.e. cozies--with the shrewd detective, the loyal assistant and a collection of village types (as we move from village to village within the county). The difference is that the stories are far more realistic and far more bloody. The characters are less quaint and chummy than those in cozies and far closer to the denizens ...

Set one-nine are excellent for mystery fans. High quality production, good story lines, characters are much less dark than previous British Mystery series, and since BBCA doesn't always run the full episodes aired in GB, and often skips episodes, we were quite pleased the note several we had not seen.
British Mysteries, like those on PBS are not often rerun here so I snap them up as soon as they become available. BBCA's prices are significantly higher so I love that I can buy them on Amazon.
