Editorial Review:Product Description:Faithfully adapted from the popular 1886 novel of the same name King Solomon s Mines was an exotic undertaking in 1936 when Africa remained the undiscovered Dark Continent. In the tradition of nail-biting serial cliffhangers this still-lively African adventure (Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times) has everything in it to appeal to lovers of action (Motion Picture Herald)! Braving the deep dark jungle and barren scorching desert of Africa a young woman Kathy (Anna Lee) her faithful guide Umbopa (Paul Robeson) and the Great White Hunter Quatermain (Cedric Hardwicke) retrace the steps of her father who mysteriously disappeared while on a quest to find the legendary King Solomon s Mines. But their search is suddenly halted when the tribal chieftain who s imprisoned Kathy s father tries to prevent the trio from finding him and the elusive treasure trove of diamonds!System Requirements:Running Time: 100 Min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: PG-13 UPC: 027616880659 Manufacturer No: 1003955
Amazon.com:Camp and cult fans may get a few laughs from this tongue-in-cheek version of the classic H. Rider Haggard adventure novel from '80s low-budget outfit Cannon Films. Richard Chamberlain gives a pun-prone take on Great White Hunter Allen Quatermain, who is recruited by Sharon Stone to rescue her father from the clutches of a German colonel (Herbert Lom) and a Turkish slaver (John Rhys-Davies), who have captured him to possess his map to the legendary diamond mines of King Solomon. Director J. Lee Thompson (
The Guns of Navarone) and the game cast do what they can with the dodgy special effects and groaner-filled script; viewers who don't mind sub-par serial-style thrills might find some kicks here.

H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines is one of those stories where it often feels that only the title and the odd character name have been filmed. If there were a prize for the least faithful version, Cannon's 1985 romp would win hands down. Richard Chamberlain's Great White Hunter Allan Quatermain may be a reluctant guide on a quest for the fabled mines, but this time his only companion is Sharon Stone, eager to save her archaeologist father from Herbert Lom's dastardly and cartoonish Wagner ...

I watched this movie with my sister, mother and grandmother many times as a child. My grandma had taped it off of cable. I loved it then and I love it now! Sure it's not as grand and well known as Indiana Jones, but it took me to a new place with a new adventure and I just loved it. The sequel is not as good and a little hoaky, but I loved that too and enjoy the fact that I can have these movies around to watch whenever I feel nostalgic. It's definitely worth watching!

I can appreciate a good B-Movie, but this film is more like a D-Movie! I agree with another reviewer that the great Jerry Goldsmith score is actually too good for this film. Herbert Lom is terribly miscast as one of the central villains, and the script seems to have been written by someone who forgot to take their medication.
This film certainly had potential, considering some of the talent at the studio's disposal. But in the end, a horrible script and lackluster direction sinks the ...
