Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Wife Astounding
My wife claims this is my 11th recording of the Beethoven 3rd Symphony. Even if, it is my only visual recording (having lost my old Zubin Mehta VHS version). The music is great, iconoclastic for the period. There are some speculative liberties taken with the history in regards to Beethoven's personal relationships but by in large, quite a bit of it is fairly accurate. I was pleasantly surprised.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - After one viewing this movie was an instant favorite of mine!
This film was shown to my Music History class. I watched from a skeptical point of view (what kind of professor would show a film for class, and what kind of stupid, biased film am I about to watch?). However, about twenty minutes into the film I became completely sucked in! This film captured the essence of Beethoven's "Eroica" in its historical, musical and artistic areas. Some viewers (especially some of the reviewers) didn't enjoy the close-up shots of the actors faces and their reactions ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Eroica
I highly recommend this DVD. The history was right on, the music was rivetingly played on period instruments, and it gave stunning insight into how people of differing classes were treated then. The Eroica Symphony truly changed the course of music.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A masterpiece about a masterpiece
On one hand I would say if you like action, straightfoward plot, special effects, and in-your-face acting and you don't like classical music then stay away, far away from this movie. On the other hand, maybe this is exactly what you need a dose of. In my book, this is one of the finest movies I have seen. The complete performance of Beethoven's 3rd Symphony is enough to recommend it. However, the acting, direction, editing, and cinematography are of the highest caliber. There is minimal dialogue, ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Intriguing concept
This CD represents an intriguing concept: a drama based on the first performance (a kind of rehearsal) of Beethoven's magnificent Symphony # 3, originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte (but changed after learning of Bonaparte's accession to Emperor). A lot of dramatic elements are encapsulated in this BBC production. The music, I think, dominates, but here I will review the drama (at another point, I may review the symphony itself, which is also included on this CD).

The music itself ... Read More
