They work very well as hand held radios - as advertized. I did however purchase these units with the Midland AVPH1 Open Face Helmet Headset for Midland GMRS as a communications devices for scooter trips. They are not very loud. They are easily drowned out by wind and vehicle noises when used with an open faced helmet. To be fair they were only tested twice on busy freeways both times.

Don't think you'll get advertised range out of any radio; that's under "perfect conditions" and "line of sight" (ie: over open water)
We use these for hiking trips and "getting lost in the mall" and they work well; we had some 10 mile units and these definately "punch thru" much better.

Hi.
I have purchase d the product two weeks ago and it seems to have pretty good reception range.
I've tested the range with my friend which live on a mountain aprox 10 KM away and we have a line of site. It had a good and clear reception.
In urban area with lot of buildings around it was dramatically reduced to 1 KM.
It is enough for my purposes.

Unfortunately this radio had not been reviewed prior to my purchase because it was a brand new product.
The batteries dies in a couple hours which isn't a surprise considering 5 watts of power but the battery level indicater always shows full charge...go figure.
Also, the directions are absolutely terrible, making the functions almost impossible to change. The menu codes are jibberish so you can't figure out how to navigate thru the functions.Midland GXT720VP3 36 Channel 30-Mile GMRS with ...
