Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Dark star
I liked it more 35 years ago, but it is still amazing how well it describes the engineering problem of maintenance under time pressure by ignorant management

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Some good ole 70's scifi fun
SciFi cult movie from the 70's. You're either onboard or not. I was onboard. The tacky sets, bad acting, overtly ridiculous or pointless plot flow here and there, the simplistic special effects, evidence of 70's tech dressed up to look futuristic; Loved it all! And a small kicker: one of the background songs is awfully similar to the Halloween theme song and this is a Carpenter flick. Guess he was warmin' up his composin' chops. Seriously, this is great late night fare. Keep your eyes open for the nod to "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes".

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A funny, clever spoof of space movies!
I know that this movie isn't for everybody, but I knew, after my first viewing, that if I could find a man who found this movie to be as funny as I did, that we would be a perfect match (and I did, and it is!). Whenever I hear those magic words, "It it time to feed the alien," I immediately begin to laugh because I know that I am about to be thoroughly entertained with what, I believe, is the funniest five-minutes in movie history! I don't normally enjoy movie "spoofs," but this movie does it with what I describe as subtle absurdity, rather than slapstick, and it works! Comedy sci-fi is quite rare, and fans of Red Dwarf, I believe, will find this movie to be an irresistable rare find.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Dark Star
This cult classic from the 70's is a tongue-in-cheek science fiction spoof. It's also one of the lowest budget productions I've ever seen (the "alien" is a beachball. No kidding - a real beachball!) The animations are intentionally unrealistic - reminiscent of some of the worst early Star Trek animations - but charming for the same reason. The "action" is a bit slow which adds to the effect. I loved this movie when I saw it in the 70's and it's great to see it back on DVD. Highly recommended for those with a warped enough sense of humor.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Three stars movie , plus a dark fourth star
I've enjoyed Dark Star for more than 25 years, and never fail to laugh in many places for example Pinback being stalked by an intelligent beachball alien. However, I've slowly learned that my friends and spouse who are less fascinated by the sci fi genre don't love it as much as I do, and never will. If only some real money could have been spent on this movie. It explores several dimensions of the future of space travel better than any other movie. Sublight space travel turns out to be boring, and dangerous. The greatest limitations are those of the human mind and the mechanical and cybernetic contrivances we create. Dispirited by the accidental death of their captain, and a long way from home, the mission of the Dark Star devolves from the search for intelligent life (which actually succeeded) to the destruction of rogue planets in unstable orbits. The HAL (before HAL) type computer has to be taught phenomenology to prevent it destroying the Dark Star. Within two minutes. And so it goes. In the end we are left with that aspect of humanity we brought into space with us in the firtst place, as memorialized in the catchy and apt song, "Benson Arizona."

Its a cult classic and I'm proud to be a member of the cult.
