Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A good remake - entertained - with a few drawbacks
It was hard to imagine Ryan Renolds without his comedic overtone but he proved to be a great dramatic actor as well. So Hollywood puts out another Remake? - so whats the verdict? I always thought the original was a really scary film.... and this one..although it didnt give me the same creepiness it still was a worthy opponent. Some of the new special effects added were effective, and of course they messed with the script again to yet give another variant. The back history part that was added, didnt make for better story-telling...so to leave it alone would have been better. In my opinion the part where the house tells the priest to "GET OUT" lacked the power of the original...which was a rememorable part. I liked the enhanced editing in this version which added a new level of creepiness, and the story really didnt have many slow parts... so overall I call this a great effort that I enjoyed in the cinema as well

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It succeded.
It scared me. It scared me good. And that, my friends, is a very hard thing to do! It's the perfect remake to an old-fashioned horror flick. All the actros did well in bringing back the old classic. Although there was scene that reflected STIR OF ECHOES. You'll know what I mean when you see it. On another note, this movie was also written by scott kosar who was responsible for THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake. Enjoy!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great Remake!!!!!!
Having seen all the Amityville Horror movies, I believe that this is the best one ever made. The original was a Good movie for being a older movie but this updated version brings us alot more. The house used in this movie is awesome. The movie begins with us seeing what really happened many years ago in the Defeo home. We see William Defeo shot to death every member of his family while they lay in their beds. What makes this movie even more great, is that actual footage from the real event is used in this film.... from police footage to the actual family members laying dead in a pool of blood in their beds. This movie, like the first shows the Lutz family move into the Defeo home because they get such a good buy on the home. Little do they know what lies ahead. This movie is excellently casted with great special effects. It is truly a edge of your seat movie. A thrilling and suspenseful remake. We see a once happy family start to fall apart as the home takes it's toll on George as he begins turning on his family. Mrs. Lutz realizes that when George is away from the home, he feels and looks much better than when he is in the home. She does research on the home and finds out that many years ago, a man named Katchum used the basement of the home as a torture chamber. After seeing this, she realizes that they must leave the home before the home destroys the entire family. Great from beginning to end. There are no dull or disappointing moments in this film. Truly one to own!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Ok, so I was wrong: it didn't suck.
I don't believe for a second that in real life (whatever that means), anything mysterious or paranormal can be connected to the Amityville case. The evidence put together of the skeptics who investigated the case is just too good to ignore.

So I sort of thought the movie would suck, since, well, I don't think too much of the real case. But it turned out I was way wrong. Most horror flicks these days seem to focus on special effects, fake boobs, and boring metal soundtracks, but once in a while a horror session worth having comes along.

And tonight it did. From time to time the movie actually IS quite creepy, and even though houses that seem to have a life of their own is something I've seen in more horror movies than I can even remember it still doesn't feel boring or stupid in this one.

Another thing that I liked about it was good acting from the young ones. Children who know how to act in horror movies are always a pleasure to watch, and the kids do very well. Kids can without a doubt be VERY creepy in horror movies.

And, a few lines here and there were actually pretty funny.

So sure, I liked it, and sure, I recommend it. (Even though I usually write book-reviews only on this site...)

However, one question:
How come people who see bizarre things (e.g. a corpse in the bathroom mirror) or have other sorts of visions or hear things and so on don't bother to TELL someone about it? This happens all the time in horror movies, and I just don't get it.
I mean, if I saw a murdered child running across the kitchen floor laughing, I'd sure as hell go ahead and tell someone about it.

Wouldn't you?

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Based On The True Story?? - "NOT"
Whatever happened to the "Based on the true story" part of this movie? This movie is far from what really happened in Amityville....this will make much more sense if the book is read first before the movie is seen. Also, I think that the 70s remake, with Margot Kidder, a.k.a Lois Lane, is the closest you can get as to what really transpired during the 28 days the Lutz's family experienced at the Amityville home.

Also, I won't go into details but the dog actually lived in the true story and that Jodi is a pig with red eyes. The book never mentioned anything about Jodi being a girl (I could be wrong, but still, it doesn't do justice). And the last scene was just disappointing that it's not even worth mentioning, for those of who who've read the book, you know what I mean.

Overall, I'm giving this movie two 1/2 stars just to give credit to the fact that this movie is the scariest movie I've seen and for the director's effort into doing his best to try and fit the movie to the true story. It would have been a five if I did not read the book first and if it was not based on a true story.
