Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Word in Troma's Defense...
I never thought I'd feel compelled to take the time to defend Troma, of all companies, but here it is: Honestly this is a video release done with love and spunk and genuine affection for the genre -- and for the heady era in which this film was originally released. The extras are really rather lovely, particularly the interview with Carlton J. Albright in which he appears to be responding to real questions on a subject of mutual interest. (This is decidedly NOT the sort of jaggedly edited puff piece one finds attached to the "special edition" releases of big-time Hollywood product.)
But the reason I truly felt compelled to weigh in was the picture quality on the DVD itself: Please do NOT be so put off by the offended aesthetic sensibilities of so many of the reviewers here that you deny yourself the experience of "The Children." I saw it in our local "grindhouse" back in the day and, believe me, it looks and sounds a hell of a lot better here. You could wait for Criterion to get around to releasing it, but why should you? They'd only find a subtler, more passive-aggressive way to muck it up and then they'd charge you forty dollars for the privilege. The beautiful absurdity of this picture really comes through in this version entirely thanks to Troma. Enjoy!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - What's with the uproar and complaints concerning the picture and sound?
This short "review" is about the picture/sound quality and other related issues of the 25th anniversary DVD release of "The Children".
Frankly I don't get it. I bought this movie - the 25th Anniversary Edition - on eBay,
in spite of the numerous negative 1 & 2 Star reviews here - for my collection (mostly
for sentimental reasons). I was expecting horribly washed out, blurry images, faded or absent colors, distorted weak sound, lots of pops and scratches, etc... Hmmm... I found none of the above. The film was the same low budget, silly and somewhat unexplained small independent movie, with fine picture, colors, sound and in very good all around condition. I played/watched it on an OK Sony DVD player on my old 27" Panasonic (CRT) television. This is the honest truth: both my wife and I were satisfied with the picture and sound of this DVD. Aside from a few "cigarette burns" (markers) and a few lines here and there, the image quality is just fine.
I'm glad TROMA released it on DVD, since (to date) nobody else has. Sadly it is OOP and hard to find, and I was lucky to secure 2 copies. I've seen many films on DVD that I can't even start to comment on without risking a coronary or brain aneurysm, induced by their transfer "quality"! Some of these are so bad, nearly unwatchable, colorless, blurry mess, that it verges on the criminal! That "The Children" is not among these is the understatement of the Millennium. I was very pleased and glad that I found and purchased this cheesy (in a good way) fairly low key and low budget movie, made nearly 3 decades ago, with its very good all around quality. This is my honest opinion. Hope my remarks were of some help. Laszlo S.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - I've contacted Anchor Bay
Last month, I contacted Anchor Bay Entertainment and asked them if they release a second issue of The Children on DVD. I told them everything that's wrong with Troma's release, but in order to get my point across I had to copy and paste most of the comments left by other people who purchased the DVD. Sorry.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - My all time favorite movie but read below for the 3 stars which you might already know

OK,

At first I can understand peoples complaint. Why did rhino put out a very clean print of the movie and finally on dvd it is [...]. That is the only complaint I have. Now if the dvd came out first and it was a bad print then we would assume that they could not do anything about it, but I dont believe like the one man said about the dvd not having much money to make a good print. Well Rhino isnt a HUGE money company as well but at least they put effort in restoring the print or getting a clean print. Therefore I am a little ashamed of this dvd. Only issue I have is, who really has the right to it? rhino or Trauma? But that is not the really big topic. I would just like to ask rhino, where the hell did they get the clean print which trauma states they had the only print in the world.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Classic "B" horror movie
Don't listen to all of the negative reviews on here. I'll be the first to say that the print is not perfect. Yes, there are some cracks & pops in the sound, and there are some scratches on the film, more in a few spots than others. But overall, this DVD is not anywhere near as bad as the naysayers would lead you to believe. The quality is actually pretty good for an obscure film this old. I have absolutely no regrets about buying this DVD.
