Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - 6+6+6= VERY GOOD REMAKE.
Yes I liked this one more than the original!!!!!!!!! The updated special effects, music and acting were freshened to make this Omen quite enjoyable. I always felt the original was less a Horror movie and much more a drama with some creepy moments. This one felt more like a good horror movie thru and thru. Lets hope they do the Omen sequels too.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Absolutely disgraceful and that is putting it mildly
The old cliched statement that many reviwers used for films they despised is "2 hours of my life I cannot get back," or something along those lines. Many get tongue tied and really find it hard to say how truly pathetic a film was, so the easy route comes to mind rather quickly. That line, or many like it, is beyond acceptable for this mess.

What amazes me the most about film goers, is their unkeen assessment of what a quality remake is. What epic, suspenseful gothic cinema is about. Is this a gothic film? No it's excrement, and the wild and whacky trip in this endeavor was that I knew from jumpstreet how bad it was going to be. I mean honestly, really, truthfully work with me here: can you get any better than Gregory Peck and the classic that this was based on?

The answer is a definitive no. The suspense is junvenile at best. This is a film about the anti-christ, make it TERRIFYING. Was it terrifying? No. This is a film about the number 666. That, in itself, should send shivers up our spines. Did it come across in the film in a way to demoralize our senses into the realm of the beast? No. Do not let anyone make you believe this film has any saving graces, as it doesn't. Save the rather stellar actors in the film (Mia Farrow, Pete Postlethwaite) (why someone as superbly talented as Pete Postlethwaite, who I met on the set of Amistad, and is REALLY that amazing, would ever take a role like the one of the priest, is beyond comprehension).

Go outside and breath in the life that revolves around us, you'll find more excitement in suburbia, and much more evil lurks out your front door.

Pathetic and John Moore is a joke.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - JOHN MOORE, OPUS 3
*** 2006. Directed by Irish born director John Moore and based on the same David Seltzer screenplay used for Richard Donner's The Omen (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) in 1976. The American ambassador in London, without knowing it, is bringing up the son of you know whom. Good remake but what for and, most of all, for whom ? Already forgotten.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A waste of my time
This shouldn't have been made and thats all it is to it. The 70's version trumps this cash cow big time. The creepy atmosphere that made the original famous is non existent. To make up for this they add Damien making a sandwiche and a chick does a 180 after a car sends her flying. Whatever. The low rated reviewers aren't crazy or old fashioned. We just know the sheer butchery of a classic movie when we see one.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Ho hum remake but nice HD presentation
Once again, this is not necessarily a film review. Instead I would like to focus on the HD presentation on Blu-Ray. This review covers the Blu-Ray edition: The Omen [Blu-ray] and NOT the standard DVD release.

The movie itself is an OK remake, but nothing more. The original is, as others here have stated, a creepier film. It's also better acted. That's not to say the actors didn't do a decent job, but it is to say that they could have been a little more emotive.

The video is spotless (meaning no blemishes on the print). The problem however is that there is some noise and for lack of a better knowledge on how to explain it, compression artifacts in some scenes. The fog scenes are the worst. I've never seen the DVD release so I can't compare quality here. The transfer is done using MPEG2. It is possible they didn't tweak the MPEG2 encoder to make for allowances to avoid the compression issues. It is kind of disappointing in the video department and certainly not something you would use as an HD showcase.

Audio is DTS Master Audio so it sounds good. The problem is that this is pretty dialog heavy and your surround speakers really won't get much of a workout. It works for this type of film because there really isn't much in the action department. Music can become quite loud at time and can drown out dialog. This could have been a lot better.

In the end this is a middle of the road release of studio back catalog titles. MSRP for this title is WAY too high considering the low quality of the encode and audio, this without even bringing the fact that I felt the movie lacking into the equation.

If you're in the market for something to showcase HD, look elsewhere. If you liked the movie and have the DVD, rent this first to see if the updated video/audio is worth the ridiculous MSRP.
