The shield came to uk in the wake of a number of other us series. My era started with Hill Street Blues and worked on through. This one gave a far different edge and was well worth watching. Second only to OZ which never ran as full series in uk. (Were there only six series made)
Rating: - Great show
This is by far one of the best season's of the shield. Can't wait for this summer and the next season. The feud between Vic and Cavanaugh is great in this season. I own all of the season's now and have watched them all again to catch up on the exploits of vic and the team. I would tell anyone who has never watched this series to get them from episode one and hang on for the ride
Rating: - INCREDIBLE!!!
Season Five of The Shield is without a doubt the best example of what an outstanding drama should be. It hits the ground running in the first episode and gets better and better from there. The last two episodes of season five are the most intense and gutwrenching two hours you will ever see on screen. The ending of the episode "Of Mice and Lem", perfectly punctuated by Smashing Pumpkins 'Disarm' playing in the background, sets up a season finale that will go down as one of the most shocking, explosive, and breathtaking ever filmed.
That's not to say that the rest of this season isn't terrific as well. The thing that stands out the most in this season is the absolutely superb acting. Now, from reading the other reviews here it is obvious that Forest Whittaker's portrayal as IAD Lt. Kavanaugh is top notch. However, the same can be said for Walton Goggins as Shane, and Michael Chiklis as Vic. The one who I believe really stands out though, and has been overlooked, is Kenneth Johnson as Lem. More than any other character in season five, Lem's world is crashing down around him on all sides. He finds himself in a situation where he knows that he will most likely wind up dead no matter what course he takes. He is alone in a way that Vic and Kavanaugh are not. The fear and isolation he faces take a very heavy toll and Kenneth Johnson should be applauded for how real he makes Lem's troubles feel. In fact, I believe that the events of the final episode wouldn't have been nearly as emotional had Johnson not played Lem's character perfectly leading up to it.
Another person here said that the ending of this season will leave you upset, but in a good way. I totally agree. I have been waiting for season six to be released since the second season five ended because I am dying to see where this is going to go.
A word of warning though to those who haven't seen the show before. Watch the first episode of the first season first, don't try to watch this show by jumping in at the middle; it may still be enjoyable but there will be ALOT that doesn't make sense. But like others have said, it will be well worth it since The Shield has been amazing in all aspects (writing, acting, directing, editing) since day one.
Rating: - The Shield, 5th Season
This is very, very sad (quality, content). The majority of the CD component is reruns from previous seasons. All they added was a very brief 1 minute segment where Danny is in the hospital with the baby and talks to Vic. Next the only other thing that is new is a minuscule segment of a poorly attended funeral for Lem with Vic opening the casket lid to put in the arm wrestling award. I wouldn't call this a "season" at all, just a review. A very poor ending for all of the drama in the previous series. Would not recommend buying.
There is a very lengthy tribute for the deceased executive producer which shows that he was well liked and respected.
