Rating: - The Car DVD
I'm glad "THE CAR" was recently released on DVD. The dialog of the movie was a little silly, but it had a good story and the special effects were great. One of those good old unforgettable '70's movies.

great movie! saw it when I was a kid in the 70's, scared me back then.

Writing a review for The Car is like someone explaining the joy of watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show over and over again, either you get it or you don't. The joy is in the memories of a time and place long gone rather then the artistic or technical aspects of the film.
For the uninitiated, "the virgins" if you will, the acting is both wooden and cartoonish, the special effects are both silly and not bad, and the dialogue is both..... no its just funny.
No matter how many people I mentioned it to, no one seemed to care that The Car was coming out on DVD. Their ignorance was well placed. The movie was exactly how I remember it when it ran late night on local WOR channel 9. Those nostalgic recollections were both a blessing and a curse. Watching The Car was like unearthing one of your favorite long lost Christmas toys. You remember fondly how much joy it provided you, but you also sadly realize that the magic is gone.
We can only hope that Josh Brolin's recent success causes the powers that be to look into a fresh, big-budget remake of his father's cult classic. Then maybe we can all experience The Car all over again with fresh eyes, and this time take our friends along for the ride. But even then, the DVD will be out almost immediately, ruining the delayed gratification that was able to build up to the release of this new print.
After seeing this gem after all these years, I unfortunately believe that you really can't ever go home again. But this movie did allow me to visit my childhood, even if only for a brief time, and any film that is capable of accomplishing that is a five-star film in my book. So I say, "Let's do the time-warp again!"
Rating: - Still Great To Watch After All These Years
I hadnt seen The Car for years but it had always stuck in the back of my mind along with Duel and The Shootist. These 3 movies have always been my sentimental favourites. The Car while not being a perfect movie is still great viewing if you can accept and over look it's small flaws, for example in some chase scenes the picture is speed up to give a greater feel of speed but it's just plain distracting and unnecessary and also a bit of silly dialog at the cemetary scene 'What can we do for you sweet thing!'. But all in all there is some great production value's including some of the camera angles (you can only see the cars tyres for the first few scenes of the movie- AWESOME)and the great music score both of which add to intensity and feel of this terrific little movie. While not produced quite as well as Duel it moves along at smarter pace maintaining interest the entire film. For a 31 year old film it is still a decent late nights entertainment(This movie always played on tv late at night) If you liked movies like Duel, Christine or even Jaws you should love this. A Real Gem
